Our Project

We stop deforestation: we protect 1.150.212 hectares of natural forests in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest in Colombia - we avoid an average of 3.622.352 Tons of CO2 per year to be released into the atmosphere - while safeguarding its biodiversity and providing education, healthcare, sanitation, food security & several co-benefits for 15.932 indigenous people.

REDD+ Matavén takes place in the Indigenous Reservation of the Matavén Forest, an indigenous territory located in the Orinoco-Amazon transition zone of Colombia.
  • Matavén is the 4th largest indigenous reservation in Colombia.
  • Matavén is in the Orinoco-Amazon transition zone of Colombia, acting as a gatekeeper: Matavén prevents deforestation threats to pass from the Orinoco Savannahs to the Amazon.

ACATISEMA and MEDIAMOS F&M - the developers - joined together in 2012 to create a REDD+ in the RIU-SM.

We design and develop 8 Activities, hand in hand with RIU-SM indigenous communities to stop deforestation, protect RIU-SM natural tropical forests & its rich biodiversity while improving indigenous people's lives. Additionally we work on 6 Special Programs to respond to local needs and improve indigenous people livelihoods in terms of health, healthcare, education, sanitation, housing, among others.

Our Mataven REDD+ Project is certified against the Verified Carbon Standard VCS for 30 years (2013 - 2042), ensuring the integrity, quality, credibility and transparency of our project at an international level. Also, this certification grants the Project a quantity of Carbon Offsets to sell and generate revenue to finance the Project.

We are officially recognized at a national and an international level. Our actions complement and are consistent with the objectives of Colombian forest programs, national regulations and laws; as well as, international conventions, agreements and obligations (Paris Agreement, SDGs).

We meet the requirements established under the Cancun Safeguards and adopted by the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). We follow the practices of Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) consigned in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). We promote decision-making processes through the participation of RIU-SM indigenous peoples to provide transparency and equality.

Our Project is a participatory process

We work hand in hand with Matavén indigenous communities: we constantly inform, ask and train them so that they actively help us planning and developing the activities.

The greenhouse effect is a natural process that occurs when gases in Earth's atmosphere trap the Sun's heat. These heat-trapping gases are called greenhouse gases (GHG) and they make Earth a comfortable place to live by keeping it warm enough.

2

Some human activities (industry, transportation, deforestation, among others) have increased the concentration of GHG and the atmosphere is retaining more heat than required, causing Earth to warm up, a phenomenon known as Global Warming. The increase in global temperature is significantly altering our planet’s climate.

Trees absorb Carbon Dioxide (CO2), release Oxygen and store Carbon in their roots, trunks and branches.
- When deforestation occurs and trees are cut down, stored Carbon is released into the atmosphere, combines with Oxygen and creates CO2, a GHG that traps heat. The increase of CO2 concentration intensifies the greenhouse effect and the atmosphere retains more heat than required, causing Earth to warm up and change the planet's climate.
- When forests are protected, stored Carbon is kept in the trees and not released into the atmosphere.

4

The United Nations designed different mechanisms to tackle climate change, such as REDD+ projects, which goal is to reduce global CO2 emissions by stopping deforestation and forest degradation. We created the Mataven REDD+ Project to protect RIU-SM natural tropical forests and avoid CO2 emissions to be released to the atmosphere. We work hand in hand with its local indigenous communities to make a lasting change in behavior towards sustainable practices, forest and biodiversity protection while improving their quality of life.

Every ton of avoided CO2 emissions results in the creation of one Carbon Offset. Carbon Offsets are issued after strict validation and verification processes completed by independent audit firms against international standards - to ensure the integrity, quality, credibility and transparency of the project.

1 Carbon Offset = 1 Ton of CO2 emission that was not emitted to the atmosphere

6

Carbon Offsets are sold to individuals and companies around the world aiming to compensate their environmental impact, play an active role in tackling climate change and support creating real benefits for indigenous communities.
Revenue from the sale of Carbon Offsets allows us to independently finance and run the project.
